Work with us
We want to work with you.
Also We don’t have auditions.
Auditions tend to set the wrong relationship right off the bat: deeply disempowering to actors. Also you can’t play what they won’t audition you for.
What we have is simpler. It’s a list of everyone who has worked with us or said that they’d like to. Every time we produce a show, we email the whole list, asking a few questions:
1: Are you available for these dates?
2: What roles would you like to play? And why?
3: If you don’t know the person sending the email, tell them a little about yourself. .
The form below will put you on that list. You’ll get the emails. We don’t take people off of that list (unless they ask us to).
We do it this way because our whole shit is about putting actors at the wheel, and because we prefer an actor who cares about a part to one who is ‘right’ for it.
It’s not a perfect system by any means, but it’s what we do. On balance we’ve decided we’d rather live with the problems of this system than live with the problems of auditioning.
The Project wants to cast inclusively.
If you have been given the subtle (or not subtle?) message in the past that Shakespeare isn’t for people like you, we are here to say, firmly and politely, fuck all that horseshit. It is absolutely for you, for us.
We want our plays to be like our cities: full of all sorts of extraordinary people.
Furthermore, the Project won’t put you in a role or keep you out of a role because of who you are or how you present. In the Project, the actor is in charge, full stop. You’re in charge of your characters’ pronouns & forms of address, costumes, everything. Nobody will tell you what it ‘means’ for your character to be played by ‘someone like you’. No one will ask you to represent an idea of some kind. You decide what you mean. You represent yourself.
Thanks for reading all that. Pick a city and let’s play.
